Victorian lakeside village hosts 9-wk summer program of the arts, education & recreation in ecumenical environment. Gave its name to similar cultural programs held all over the US and Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries. (Fee during season see ciweb.org ) Gingerbread-style cottages/charming gardens create living quilt of yesteryear small-town America. Chautauqua Institution is on the Nat'l Register Historic Places. FDR gave his "I hate war" speech here. Box at Info Desk. Sometimes upstairs at office off-season.

From North: Rt I-90 (Thruway) Exit 60, Westfield; Rt 394 South to Westfield/Mayville to Chautauqua Institution (11 mi) From South: Rt I-90 North to Exit 10A, Interstate 86 East 23 mi to Exit 7, North on Rt 76 for 4 mi to Rt 394. Right to Chautauqua Institution. Gate fee required during season. Reduced fee after noon. Parking fee applies ONLY during nine-week Chautauqua season (3rd wk June-4th wk Aug) FREE Sun. during season.
