The Augusta Canal Trail is a National Heritage Area located in . The Trail is a wide, level towpath once used by mules to pull canal boats to the Canal headgates. Located between the canal and the Savannah River, this is an out and back walk with the chance to see river otters and other wildlife. Built in 1845 to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, this canal brought textile and other manufacturing to the region in the era before, during and after the American Civil War.
