GREAT DISMAL SWAMP CANAL/SOUTH MILLS, NC: The Dismal Swamp Canal is located along the eastern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia and North Carolina in the United States. It is the oldest continually operating man-made canal in the United States, opened in 1805. It is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, an inland route, which parallels the east coast and offers boaters shelter from the Atlantic Ocean from Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey, to Brownsville, Texas. While in the area take time to visit the Dismal Swamp State Park and the community of South Mills. There are some small shops, a seasonal bakery and a restaurant to fill your shopping and eating needs!

Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center 2356 US Hwy 17 N., South Mills, NC 27976DIRECTIONS TO START/FINISH POINT:FROM RICHMOND AND NEWPORT NEWS:1) Take I-64 East. 2) At Exit 264, take I-664 South to Exit 15B (I-64 West, I-264 East).3) Merge onto I-64 West to Exit 296 (Business US 17 South/Portsmouth/Deep Creek).4) Take Exit 296 and turn right at the top of the ramp onto Business US 17 South (George Washington Highway) toward Elizabeth City.5) After one mile, Business US 17 South turn left and then right after crossing the bridge over the Dismal Swamp Canal.6) At the stop sign (T-intersection), turn right on US 17 South (a four-lane divided highway).After about 13.4 miles (3 miles after crossing the state line into North Carolina), turn right into the Rest Area.7) The Start Point is the green building on your left. Please park away from the doors.FROM NORFOLK AND VIRGINIA BEACH:1) Take I-64 East (Inner Loop) to Exit 291B (US 17 South).2) Take Exit 291B and turn right at the top of the ramp.3) Exit 15 B to the right onto US 17 South. 4) After about approximately 20.3 miles (3 miles after crossing the state line into North Carolina), turn right into the Rest Area.5) The Start Point is the green building on your left. Please park away from the doors.
