Event comments

Fort Stevens was the primary military defense installation in the three-fort Harbor Defense System at the mouth of the Columbia River (Forts Canby and Columbia in Washington were the other two). The Fort served for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. View displays dating back to the Civil War at the museum in the Historic Area.

Event information

Daily, dawn to dusk. To and around Historic Area, and then to Coffenbury Lake. Ft. Stevens is a part of Lewis & Clark National Historic Park and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Pets allowed on leash and with proper clean up. Historic Area gate is locked at 4 p.m. in winter and 6 p.m. in the summer. Plan to start walk early enough to complete it by closing. Mosquito repellent advisable during summer months.

how to get to the event

Driving to the start box

1180 Pacific Drive, Hammond, Oregon. From Astoria, follow US 30 west and then HWY 101 south. Right onto E. Harbor Drive by Walgreens. At 4-way stop in Warrenton, continue straight and drive to the blinking light 4-way stop in Hammond, where the store will be on the left. From Seaside, follow HWY 101 north. Left onto E. Harbor Drive by Walgreens and continue as above. Registration materials are in a portable, black, plastic file box. Look for it to your right as you enter the store. Register here then drive short distance to begin walk. Driving directions are on walk route instructions.
