Event comments

There is parking around the Gibson Park area. Weslaco is in Hidalgo County at 26933N 975915 W. The Valley Nature Center's 6-acre park is home to a wide variety of native plants and animals. The aim is to protect local plant species diversity as well as to make diverse food and habitat available for resident and migratory wildlife. Weslaco was known during WWII as the "sandbagging capital of the world." The city also was known a the Neon City because businesses used neon signage dating back to the late 1800's. Many of these are still in use today. Closed on all major holidays.

The walk goes past the Frontera Audubon Nature Center, through the historic downtown, past the restored railroad depot, a bakery, a 1928 water tower that is now a theater, churches, and the library. Open T-F 9am-5pm, Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 1-5pm,

how to get to the event

Driving to the start box

301 S. Border AVE, Weslaco, TX 78599. From I-2 take the exit Highway 88 or Texas Blvd. From the west, turn RIGHT and from the east, turn LEFT. Follow Texas Blvd across a set of railroad tracks to West 4th. Turn RIGHT on West 4th to Border AVE. Turn RIGHT on Border AVE for one block then RIGHT into Gibson Park. The Valley Nature Center is located at the back of Gibson Park. Closed on Mondays.
