Event information

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Warwick/French Creek region of Chester and Berks Counties was home to a vibrant iron industry. Iron furnaces or plantations dotted the landscape, supported by local charcoal hearths. In 1771, Mark Bird built Hopewell Furnace. During the Revolutionary War, PA furnaces, including Hopewell, played a critical role in supplying the army of the fledgling USA. In 1935, Hopewell Furnace was sold to the federal government and designated as a National Historic Site in 1938. Hopewell Furnace was restored to its current splendor by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site is surrounded on three sides by French Creek State Park. Once a thriving industrial complex, French Creek State Park is a 7,916-acre natural, recreational center. Walkers will walk along a section of the historic Horseshoe Trail, which runs for 140 miles from Valley Forge to the Appalachian Trail north of Harrisburg. The park is open on Federal Holidays with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day, M. L. King Day and Presidents Day. The park is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday all year long. During the Summer season, the park is open 7 days per week 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
