Event comments
The glacial drift that covers this area was deposited during two glacial events, the Nebraskan and Kansan. Following these, the natural process of weathering and erosion resulted in a surface generally rolling with flat ridges between drainages and soil known as Lindley. During the 1930s, Dr. Bohumil Shimek, an Iowa naturalist, University of Iowa professor, and one of Iowa's early conservationists convinced the state to acquire forest land in Lee and Van Buren Counties along with abandoned farms.

Event information
Dawn to dusk. Walk box is on the sign at the HQ. The terrain on Shimek Forest is characterized by narrow, flat ridges separated by deeply cut drainages. The area streams are intermittent , slow running and are dry at times. Walking stick recommended.

Driving to the start box
33653 Rte J56. Enter Farmington on Rte 2. Right after the bridge for 3 blocks. Left on Pearl st (rte 2) for approximately 2 miles to headquarters on left. Remote start at Black Oak Lake. Leave HQ and turn left. Right on Black Oak Lake rd.
