Event comments

The walk box is behind the counter inside the Welcome Center. After registering you can do an 11k walk from the Welcome Center or drive a few miles to the 5k or 10k trailheads. Driving instructions are with the walk directions. Please check our Facebook page Windy City Walkers or the club website www.windycitywalkers.org for the latest updates. During summer Welcome Center is open on Saturday. To contact the center call 815-423-6370 or www.fs.fed.us/mntp/.

Start times 8 am-4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and Federal holidays. (Welcome Center) Trails are on old roads and railroad beds surfaced with crushed gravel and mowed grass. Walks pass through large open fields and restored prairie. On the trails you can view and pass old ammunition bunkers--the remnants of the long-closed Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, the WWII-designed Bailey Bridge, and Midewin's bison herd. Parts of the trail are shared with bicyclists and equestrians. The trails are open daily from 4 am-10 pm

This event also has a physical start box. These are the driving directions:

30239 South Illinois Route 53, Wilmington, IL. Phone: 815/423-6370, www.windycitywalkers.org. From I-55, exit 241. Turn left (east). Travel 3.8 miles on New River Road to IL 53. Left on IL 53 1.0 miles to Midewin on your right. From I-57, exit 327, Peotone. Travel west toward Wilmington. Right on IL 53 to Midewin, 1.5 miles. From I-80, exit 132, IL 53 and Chicago St. South on IL 53 for 15 miles. Midewin Welcome Center is on left. After registration you will drive on Route 66 (now IL 53) to Start Point.
