Event comments
Antietam Lake dates to 1864 when the City of Reading purchased the Samuel Ohlinger gristmill and farm for a water supply. By 1894 the water in the lake become so polluted with farm runoff, the city purchased and demolished all the farms on the surrounding hillside. A massive reforestation began in the early 20th century. Over 200,000 seedlings were planted on the barren slopes. Today it is no longer used as water supply but as a recreation area for fishing and hiking. Some of the historic sites are the Antietam Lake Dam, the Seven Step Dam, the Stone-Walled Creek and Mother's Tree Plaza.
