Event comments
This is the second walk of a 4-walk weekend! This walk will be in LeFlore County. This part of Oklahoma has been explored through out history. Archaeological evidence of humans date the Mound Builders in the area between 500-1300 AD. The Mayan Indians came next. Viking runestones from 900 AD are found in neighboring town of Heavener. Then French explorer Bernard de la Harpe came to the area in 1719 AD. In more current times, over eight railroads have passed through Poteau. McKenna Street (on today's walk) lies approximately on the Old Frisco rail bed. Poteau founded the first two-year college in Oklahoma in 1933; it is now called Carl Albert State College and is on the walk. A block of rooms has been reserved at Prime Inn and Suites in Poteau at 1702 N Broadway across from the McDonald's and about a mile from the start point. The TWC block rate is $75 so about $85 after taxes. It has a continental breakfast (not hot). It's a Best Western property. There is a cut-off to a week before the walk and they can be cancelled up until that time. We are planning a dinner at Warehouse Willy's on Saturday, April 2nd at 6:30pm. 300 Dewey Avenue in Poteau.
