Event comments

Dudley Park is the Start Point and is open 365 Days per year and Dudley Park restrooms are always open. Athens is home to the University of Georgia. Check the UGA home games football schedule. We do not recommend doing this walk on a UGA football game day since parking and restaurant access is very difficult. The Cook and Brother Plaza at the Start Point has a series of kiosks highlighting Athens history and the history of the railroad in Athens. You will be glad you reserved a little extra time to review these kiosks. Both the 5k and the 10k provide an interesting sampler of downtown Athens, the Oconee River Greenway, and the University of Georgia. Both walks also qualify for the Rails to Trails, Walking with Amerca's Veterans, and Town Halls and City Halls special programs. Athens is the hometown of the University of Georgia (40,000 students) and three other colleges making it a classic college town. Because of this, there are numerous, high-quality restaurants serving a wide variety of regional, ethnic, and American food choices usually for very reasonable prices. Downtown Athens is quaint with a classic small town, American Main Street character. The University of Georgia is the oldest Land Grant College in the USA and the nation's first State Chartered College (1785)and is often referred to as the birthplace of Public Higher Education. The university's campus is one of the best examples of college landscape architecture in the nation. Spring, Summer, and Autumn are absolutely gorgeous at UGA.
