Be sure to Google the UGA football calendar to avoid walking during football weekends as parking and restaurant access can be overcrowded. Dudley Park, open 365 days a year, is the Start Point. Park restrooms are available just beyond the Start Point. The Cook and Brother Plaza at the Start Point has a series of informative kiosks highlighting the history of railroading in Athens and city of Athens history. Reserve extra time to review the kiosks. Both the 5k and the 10k routes provide a sampler of downtown Athens, the Oconee River Greenway, and the University of Georgia campus. Both walks qualify for the Rails to Trails, Walking with America's Veterans, and Town Halls and City Halls special programs. Athens is a college town, home to University of Georgia, Athens Tech and Piedmont College. Chartered in 1785, UGA is the oldest Land Grant College in the United States and is often referred to as the birthplace of Public Higher Education. The walk route highlights exceptional examples of building and landscape architecture. UGA's campus is one of the best examples of college landscape architecture in the nation. Spring, Summer, and Autumn are absolutely gorgeous. Downtown Athens has many accessible food choices representing a variety of ethnic cuisines.
