Event comments

New Directions for 2026 will still harken back to the route laid out by Brenda Weirich several years ago, guiding walkers through the heart of Mt. Wolf and Manchester, PA. These two neighboring boroughs in northeastern York County share a deep sense of history and community pride, making them a perfect pairing for a leisurely yet engaging walk. Manchester, originally settled in the mid-1700s, grew as an agricultural hub before becoming a small industrial town, with historic homes and churches reflecting its rich past. Mt. Wolf, incorporated in 1910, owes much of its early growth to the railroad and the entrepreneurial spirit of George H. Wolf, whose lumber, coal, and grain business was central to the town's identity. Today, both towns maintain their small-town charm with quiet residential streets, welcoming parks, and well-preserved architecture that hints at their storied beginnings. The 2026 route will weave together these elementspassing historic landmarks, shady tree-lined lanes, and pockets of local charactercreating a walk that is as much about connecting with the past as it is about enjoying the present. Whether you're a longtime participant or a first-time visitor, this year's walk promises a thoughtful blend of nostalgia and fresh perspectives, celebrating the enduring spirit of Mt. Wolf and Manchester while honoring the vision that inspired the route years ago.
