Event comments

This 5K and 10K walk is dedicated to the memory of John McCoy, a long-time, active member of the York White Rose Wanderers who first designed this trail in 2006. John's dedication to walking, community, and preserving local history left a lasting impact, and this route stands as a tribute to his contributions. The walk showcases the rich history and charm of Dillsburg, founded in 1740 by Irish immigrant Matthew Dill and long a hub for local agriculture. During the Civil War's Gettysburg Campaign, the quiet town was twice invaded by Confederate cavalryfirst by Albert G. Jenkins's brigade, then by Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's division. Along the route, you'll visit notable landmarks such as Dill's Tavern, originally established in the 1750s with its current stone structure built between 1794-1819, and the Rev. Anderson B. Quay House, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The walk winds through quaint residential streets, past historic churches, and into the heart of the community, offering a mix of scenic views, preserved architecture, and stories from America's colonial and Civil War eras.
