Athens is the home of the University of Georgia, the state's signature university, and the first and oldest land grant college in the USA. UGA was founded in 1785 and is the birthplace of public higher education in the nation. UGA now registers over 40,000 students. With three other colleges in town, Athens is a premier American College Town. Cars Hill, Dudley Park, the Firefly Trail, and the Oconee River Greenway are an interesting mix of some of Athens premier attractions and are included in this walk. That is, a downtown park, Rails to Trails, the Oconee River, and a mature Southern Hardwood forest provide ample variety. The Rails to Trails segment was originally part of the Georgia Railroad system. The Oconee River system is the primary river flowing North to South through Athens. Both the 5K and 11k end by passing under the Murmur Trestle railroad bridge made famous by the rock group REM in the 1980's. The most iconic image of the 1980's Athens music scene is the Georgia Railroad Trestle that graced the back cover of R.E.M.'s first LP, "Murmur," released in 1983.
