Event comments
The Hondo Heritage Hike starts at the Medina County Museum which is located in the original railroad depot building. The first rail line reached the Hondo area in 1881 and the town of Hondo was formed when building lots were sold by the railroad. The 5k walk passes through the old downtown, the restored Raye Theater, the Medina County Courthouse and Old Jail and many other historical sites. The 10k hike passes through what was once the world's largest air navigation school. The U.S. Army built the Hondo Army Air Field in 1942. Over 14,000 navigators were trained to serve in World War 11 before it closed in 1946.
