Event comments

Please download the 8-page brochure for complete event details and pre-registration form. Pre-registration for the two social events is REQUIRED. Pre-registration for any of the 4 Boston volkswalks is strongly encouraged. The 6K and 11K routes go from the Courtyard Marriott-South Boston (adjacent to the South Bay Shopping Mall) to Castle Island. "Southie," is an evolving residential neighborhood with a strong Irish-American heritage. Diners and taverns mingle with pizzerias and gastropubs. Both the 6K and 11K routes pass a candlepin bowling alley and a variety of pubs and restaurants. The main thoroughfare (East Broadway) showcases many 20th century triple-decker houses and brick row houses. In some blocks along Broadway, one can view beautiful wrought iron stair rails and old brick churches. The two rolling hills on this portion of the route end at Medal of Honor Park, which offers sweeping views of Pleasure Bay and Castle Island. Medal of Honor Park is a local landmark that blends recreation with historical commemoration. Restrooms and water bottle filling stations are available on Castle Island. The 6K participants to Castle Island return via public bus. An alternate 5K route through Moakley Park and along the water returns to the hotel without going to Castle Island. SPECIAL INFO: Pre-registration deadline is August 1, 2026 for this AVA 50th Anniversary Signature Walk to Castle Island in South Boston with a Meet & Greet on Friday and an AVA 50th Anniversary Cake Night on Saturday. Tables will be available on both nights for small groups to play board games or cards. Three YREs in Boston (Freedom Trail, Back Bay and Hidden Gems/Special Places) are also available. A specially designed magnet will be given to all registered participants of this Signature Event. Staffed start/finish on both Friday and Saturday for in-person registration at the Courtyard by Marriott - South Boston. Group walk of Castle Island is offered at 9am on both Friday and Saturday.
