2026

What an opportunity to explore Custer State Park on this extend walk. The colors should be prime in the park when you go to walk; weather in the Black Hills can be unpredictable so go prepared

Event comments

Walk from dawn to dusk. Registration will take place offsite at the Canyon Lake Activity Center on Oct 10th. You have nine days in which to walk anywhere from 5k up to 42K. I would recommend you pick up a Custer State Park map when you enter the park and plan your walks carefully to minimize walks back to the car. I would also recommend that you do not try to complete the 42k as a soloist. The Centennial Trail extends for 22 miles in Custer State Park. The trail at Badger Hole and around Legion Lake will add distance to create a 25 mile walk (Marathon). Doing a 5k each day would take you 8 days to walk t the complete trail. Iron Creek Trailhead is one of four starting points for this Extended Distance Walk, The other three start points are: Badger Hole Trailhead, French Creek Trailhead and the Highland Creek Trailhead. Restrooms are available at Badger Hole, Legion Lake, French Creek Horse Camp. Although it is truly the case, you will be walking with the Wild Things, this walk does not qualify for this special program. That said, please yield if you encounter wildlife on the trail. Contact your POC, Anne Horst, for this event for planning tips for this event.
