TRAIL: The 10km route consists of a 6km route plus two loops that branch off. All walkers begin by crossing Memorial Drive and entering the Paul Dudley White Path along the Charles River. After about 2km, the 10km distance crosses the pedestrian/bicycle-only Weeks Bridge over the Charles River to several interesting art and building sights on the Harvard Business School campus before rejoining the 6km walkers and entering the original Harvard campus. Sights along the route include Harvard Square, Cambridge Commons, and a labyrinth near Harvard Divinity School. The route then follows campus paths and streets past several Harvard museums (free to Massachusetts residents and open on Sundays; restrooms available), passing stately, historic homes, and many restaurants before arriving at the finish. The walks are mostly flat and on paved surfaces for an AVA rating of 1A, although there are stairs on the 10km route. The trail would be doable for strollers, but might be difficult for wheelchairs.HISTORY: Around 1630, English colonists secured a deed from the female chief of the Massachusett tribe, who was living near the confluence of Alewife Brook and the Mystic River. In 1640 the General Court ordered that she be paid about £23 for the land now occupied by Cambridge and Watertown and given a coat every winter during her lifetime. Newtowne, as Cambridge was called until 1638, was laid out in an orderly grid of streets. Harvard College, one of the first colleges in America, was founded in 1636.By the time of the American Revolution, Cambridge was a quiet New England farming village clustered near the Common and the College. Today, Cambridge is home to a culturally diverse population of over 100,000. Students from around the world study at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Lesley University. The heavy industries of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been replaced by technology-based enterprises: software & biotech.
