Event comments
Come walk the grounds of the historic Alameda Naval Air Station (1940-1997). In 1936, the City of Alameda transferred the original local airport site to the federal government for $1.00. On November 1, 1940, NAS Alameda was officially commissioned and opened for operations. Alameda NAS served as a massive deployment and maintenance hub for Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers (such as the USS Hornet and USS Enterprise), logging over 2 million work-hours a month at its 1945 peak. Following the war, the NAS was active in Cold War Operations as an industrial and operational station with expansive aircraft overhaul and repair depots. The USS Hornet is now a museum and open for tours. The old Alameda Naval Air Station has two famous Cold War-era jets on display outside Alameda Point. You can see an A-4 Skyhawk and an A-7 Corsair II. These planes used to fly from the base when it was open. The jets are mounted on poles so it looks like they are flying.The former Alameda Naval Air Station (now called Alameda Point) is a hot spot for cool research and science companies. Saildrone: This group builds high-tech, wind-powered ocean drones. They sail the seas gathering data on weather, fish, and climate.Astra: A space company that designed and tested small rockets and satellite parts right in Alameda. Pyka: A tech group building autonomous (self-flying) planes. Also many biotech, health and green energy companies. And the former Alameda Naval Air Station is now home to a very popular area called Spirits Alley. It is a group of local wineries, breweries, and distilleries built inside old airplane hangars.

Driving to the start
2151 Ferry Point, Alameda, CA 94501 From I-80 W: Follow I-80 W, I-880 S to Exit 42 Broadway/Alameda. Continue onto 5th St. Take CA-61 S/Webster St Tube to Webster St. Right on Ralph Appezato Memorial Parkway. Continue on to W. Atlantic Avenue to Pan Am Way. The park will be on your left. From South: Follow I-880 N to 6th St in Oakland. Take exit 41B from I-880 N toward Broadway/Downtown. Continue onto 6th St/Turn right onto Broadway. Use the middle lane to turn right onto 7th St. Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto Webster St. Continue onto CA-260 S/CA-61 S/Webster Street Tube to Webster St. Right on Ralph Appezato Memorial Parkway. Continue on to W. Atlantic Avenue to Pan Am Way. The park will be on your left.
