By way of historical background, the Helen Chamber of Commerce established an AVA sanctioned the"Volksmarch Club" in Helen, GA, in 1987 and annual spring WALK was a very successful event held on the fourth weekend in April over the next 20 years. It grew into a huge annual spring event in Helen and featured one of the most beautiful walking trails at Unicoi State Park passing beautiful trout streams, and large lakes. Unfortunately, the original Helen club ceased to operate as a sanctioned AVA club around 2006-07. Area hiking clubs that enjoyed coming to Helen in the spring for the big walking event, e.g. Perdido Key Volksmarch Club(PKVC) and the Panama City Florida Sandpipers (since disbanded), were very disappointed. Former President of the PKVC club (enhanced by his military service in Germany which provided us an experienced Bavarian Volksmarcher to lead the way), Rod Powell, retired to Helen, GA, in 2023 and with the dedicated help from the many local leaders that loved the Bavarian culture and hiking, reformed the Charter group and in 2024, the AVA re-sanctioned the new Club as #0994.--------------------Today, we again offer a beautiful AVA Sanctioned 10k hike or 5k(Rating 3C) on the famaous Unicoi Trail or the alternate very easy 5k walk (Rating 1A) on the Hardman trail, suitable for strollers, walkers, etc. You will most certainly will want to come back to Alpine Helen first weekend in May annually to participate in the unique and fun for the whole family Bavarian style Volksmarch event. Since Alpine Helen, GA, is one of the top most visited places in the State of Georgia, you will want to stay and take in all the other many of the local trails and waterfalls, recreational activities, restaurants, international gift shops, unique lodging and camping opportunities and much more in visiting the many beautiful area parks. Basic Registration fee for the 10k or 5k walks is only $4.00 and 2027 Volkswanderung souvenir Hat Pin (optional) is only $5.00. The FEST starts at NOON. Walkers participating in the "Volkswanderung Bavarian Fest" (optional) from 12:00-2:00 pm". Fest discout is only $10.00 per person, includes: 2 tickets for German bier (must be 21 or over) - 1 ticket for German lunch, & 1 FREE Prize ticket ( additional prize tickets sold by Helen Rotary) plus live German UM-PAH music at our Bavarian Biergarten. Driving to the start

Bodensee German Resturant , 64 Munich Strasse, Helen, GA 30545From Atlanta, GA, take 400 north to the end of the four lane hwy. Continue straight to Hwy 115 to Cleveland, Ga. From Cleveland, take Helen Highway to Helen, Ga. Turn right on Munich Strasse and Bodensee is on the right. On site Registration ($4) table is in the Biergarten and is the start for 10K and 5K walks. Return to the Biergarten for stamping of books, drawing for gift items, and the "Bavarian Fest" (Discounted food, bier, & live German musici only $10.00) from 12:00-2:00 pm in the Bodensee Biergarten. You may also "Opt Out" of the Fest price and order off the menu at regular price. If you have not ever completed a traditional German Volksmarch with a Fest in Bavaria, this is it! The big Rotary prize drawing is at 2:)pm.
