Event comments

The walk is rated 3C for the 10k/12k walk if walking through the woods; 5k and non-woods 10/12k rated 1A. 13k (that includes hike to Perkins Memorial) is 4C. Appalachian Trail segments include walk thru the Zoo past Bear Mountain Inn, around portion of Hessian Lake and options to walk Bear Mountain Bridge or AT trail to Perkins Memorial. We have become aware that the gate to the parking lot at the New York State Fort Montgomery (FM) State Historic Park's Visitor Center may be closed when the Visitor Center is closed. You should be prepared for alternative parking if you start or end your walk when the FM Visitor Center is closed.Option 1: Park at Bear Mountain State Park Inn. Park in the parking lot near the Bear Mountain Inn (restrooms, gift shop, cafe, restaurant and lodging inside the Inn). (Walk directions will have information from this point as well). Call ahead to ensure the NY State Visitors Center at Fort Montgomery is open for registration (845-446-2134). Option 2: Park in Overflow parking on 9W. This is a free overflow parking area north of the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site on 9W. It will add a total of almost 1 km (which you may add) to your walk (.44 km each way). This parking area is not gated. Address:708 Route 9W, HF NY 10928 (Near 9W overpass over Mine Dock Rd) Appalachian Trail (AT) walkers: Fell free to contact Betty Green at 845-774-5335, to discuss her ideas for including the AT in your Fort Montgomery walk with less distance added to your walk. (Basically, sign in and walk the FM historic site (excluding the redoubt areas across 9W). Re-park at the Bear Mountain Inn and follow the FM Instructions for the AT using AT Option 2 if you want to take the beautifully redone portion of the AT to Perkins Memorial. This is really spectacular. It is a climb and best done in the cooler part of the day, if possible. By climb, I do not mean rock climbing or rock scrambling. It's just a lot of elevation gain.)
